Sean and I thought it would be a good idea to provide a primer of terms we often use while calling games, in case there was any confusion for our listeners. We hope the graphic and glossary can help enhance your enjoyment of our broadcasts!

We tend to view the playing field as a flexible grid, with appropriate terminology describing player position. The “D,” halfway line, bylines/goal lines, and sidelines/touchlines are all clearly marked on the pitch, but wings and channels are a bit broader in scope. For us, the wings cover the area between the sidelines and the vertical edge of the 18-yard box (if those lines were to be extended across the entire pitch). The channels occupy the space in between the wings.

If a player were advancing up the left wing of the diagram above with the ball, and we needed to describe his or her cross, the near post would refer to the left post, while the far post would be the one on the right. However, if the cross is coming in from the right side of the field, we would use the opposite orientation.

Glossary

PASSING
Square: a lateral pass, usually from a wide area toward a more central position.
Center: squaring the ball into a shooting position, e.g. sending a cross into the opponents’ box.
Switch: a longer lateral or diagonal pass that moves the ball from one wing to the other in order to attack the opponents’ weak side.
Early ball: when a player sends a pass quickly forward to spring someone upfield.
Through ball: any pass along the ground that splits the opposing defense, seeking an attacking player on the run.
Over-the-top ball: Same as a through ball, except sent through the air.
One-two: a quick exchange of passes between two players executing overlapping runs.

SHOTS
Inswinger/outswinger: Any delivered ball whose trajectory spins toward the opposing goal is considered an inswinger, while an outswinger takes the ball away from the goal. (Used mainly when describing dead-ball situations, i.e. corners and free kicks.)
Half-volley: Whereas a volley is a shot where the ball is struck before it hits the ground, the half-volley is struck just after the ball bounces. Some great examples of volleyed and half-volleyed goals can be found here (the Kanoute, Gerrard and Nayim goals are all half-volleys; everything else is a volley). Here’s another great look at a half-volley goal.
Olímpico: A goal scored directly from a corner delivery. One of my personal favorite occurrences in the sport–I could watch these things forever.

FOULS
Studs up: If a referee can see the studs on a player’s cleats during a tackle, it’s considered dangerous and usually will result in a card.
Agricultural challenge: Thanks to former Maroons play-by-play man Omar Al-Ubaydli (and the BBC by proxy, we suppose), this term refers to a challenge that is clumsy, heavy and crude, much like agricultural machinery.

If there are any phrases or terms you hear during broadcasts that you’d like clarified, please feel free to drop us a comment here, or email us at gomaroons@gmail.com. Enjoy!

Via @ChicagoMaroons:

All-UAA m.soccer: Laird (Rookie of the Year), Marshall (1st), Clifford (2nd), Coville (2nd), Giusto (h.m.), Manners (h.m.), Masri (h.m.)

Very pleased to see Laird winning ROY, not that we were truly surprised–he has patrolled the midfield well all season, combining physical presence with offensive energy, and it’s always nice to see an understated player getting some well-deserved accolades. As for the other mentions, Marshall’s first-team inclusion is almost a no-brainer for us, and the other players have pretty much landed where we expected. We would have liked to see Chris Giusto get some recognition for his astounding six shutouts in seven games, but he had some tough competition at the goalkeeper position in Rochester’s Mike Peacock and Carnegie’s Maks Khurgin.

All-UAA w. soccer: Bontz (1st), Gill (1st), Loh (2nd), Meyer (2nd), Benoit (h.m.), Denz (h.m.), Gormley (h.m.).

All three senior captains made the honor roll on the women’s side, and it’s no surprise there–they’ve been the backbone of this season’s roster. Also great to see Claire Denz, another understated player whose contributions transcend the scoresheet, make the honorable mentions list.

Our expanded coverage of tomorrow’s NCAA first-round match between Chicago and Aurora will begin on air at 10:15 a.m. If you are new to our setup, you can find all the information you need in order to stream the game at the Go Maroons Live sidebar to the right of this post, or at the Go Maroons Live tab at the top of the page. You can also e-mail us at gomaroons@gmail.com with any questions or comments. We will also be providing interactive coverage through our resurrected live blog, as well as our Twitter account (@GoMaroons). Our fearless ringleader Sean has a big deadline at work, so I will be doing play-by-play, with Ryan Tryzbiak in charge of color commentary. It’s gonna be a fun one, so be sure to tune in!

The men’s first-round match against Wartburg should go live from Wheaton at around 4:30 p.m. We’ll also have score updates from the other bracket matches (Wheaton vs. Carleton on the women’s side; Wheaton vs. Calvin on the men’s side) on Twitter.

13′ Both teams still searching for an opening. Rochester has won a couple of corner kicks, but the game is still scoreless.

16′ Senior forward Scott Cady takes a knock to the head deep in Maroon territory; a Yellowjacket forward sends a header straight into the arms of Giusto. Still no score.

19′ Welles takes the ball down the right wing and sends a low cross in for Eberhardt, whose hard redirection is just tipped around the post by Giusto. Best save of the game so far, but the Maroons are struggling to put together some offensive sequences. 0-0

22′ Best shot on goal from the Maroons so far; a nice spell of passing play ends up with Clifford, whose left-footed shot from inside the Rochester area just misses the far post.

30′ Maroons catch a break when a clearance attempt by Giusto off a corner kick is headed back toward goal by a Yellowjacket and just bounces off the crossbar and out for a goal kick.

40′ It’s been back and forth so far, but the Maroons win a dangerous free kick 15 yards out. Coville bends it over the wall, but it’s tipped over the bar by goalkeeper Michael Peacock. Rochester forward Cady is assessed a yellow card for his foul preceding the free kick. Still deadlocked with no score, approaching halftime.

44′ Chicago defender Ryan Tunstall earns a yellow card for a hard tackle in the midfield.

Halftime Neither team able to find a breakthrough in the first 45 minutes, but we’ve got an exciting back and forth game on our hands, and we’re expecting more of the same after the break.
