Two big UAA-CCIW matchups today, both happening just a couple suburbs over from each other tonight. It’s can’t-miss soccer right before the conference season.

Chicago-Wheaton (w): LISTEN to Go Maroons LIVE (iTunes — more information here)
Chicago-Elmhurst (m): Live Stats

Chicago-Wheaton preview: With all apologies to Wash U, this is Chicago’s top rival in women’s soccer. From 2002-05, the Maroons and Thunder played each other twice yearly, once midseason and once in the NCAA tournament. The postseason winner each year went on to the Final Four. Last year, the Maroons beat Wheaton 3-0 in a statement game in late September, but they ultimately fell in an excellent rematch in the second round of the postseason.

An injury to the Thunder’s lynchpin, Lauren Karsten, last year hobbled Wheaton, who relies on Karsten to control the space between their opponents’ midfielders and forwards. Karsten’s back healthy, but the losses of forward Taryne Lee and midfielder Maria Della Torre have taken away a lot of Wheaton’s explosiveness in 2010. Over the past three seasons, the Thunder’s goals per game have dropped from 3.71 to 2.93 to 1.78 (in nine games).

But make no mistake, the Thunder rule their artificial turf field. Historically, the Chicago-Wheaton rivalry has played to a heavy home-field advantage. And Wheaton just dispatched with Rochester and a crumbling Wash U team in the past week.

We’ll be watching to see how Chicago’s increased speed this year plays against some of Wheaton’s strong width, particularly outside mid Brittany Bergh. Expect fullbacks Katie Dana and Maggie Tobin to have a busy game as Bergh switches between sides. On the other side, how will Chicago be able to take advantage of their numerous weapons on the fast surface? Can they both control the game and be direct in their play?

We’re reintroducing the Go Maroons Soccer Podcast Extra for the 2010 season, where Emerald and I break down all that is Chicago soccer. Today, we talk about the women and the men through their first thirds of the season, with an idea of setting up the tough challenges to come, including conference play in a week and a half.

For the women, we talk about the team’s three-headed monster, clinical finishing, and some of the impressive play from the team’s back line. (Click to listen, right-click to download)

For the men, we cover the team’s workmanlike first games and how we expect them to really turn things up with the team getting healthier now. (Click to listen, right-click to download)

Also, keep an eye out for Emerald’s live blog link for this afternoon’s men’s game, and participate in the discussion by commenting on your impressions through the early season.

All-UAA m.soccer: Laird (Rookie of the Year), Marshall (1st), Clifford (2nd), Coville (2nd), Giusto (h.m.), Manners (h.m.), Masri (h.m.)

Very pleased to see Laird winning ROY, not that we were truly surprised–he has patrolled the midfield well all season, combining physical presence with offensive energy, and it’s always nice to see an understated player getting some well-deserved accolades. As for the other mentions, Marshall’s first-team inclusion is almost a no-brainer for us, and the other players have pretty much landed where we expected. We would have liked to see Chris Giusto get some recognition for his astounding six shutouts in seven games, but he had some tough competition at the goalkeeper position in Rochester’s Mike Peacock and Carnegie’s Maks Khurgin.

All-UAA w. soccer: Bontz (1st), Gill (1st), Loh (2nd), Meyer (2nd), Benoit (h.m.), Denz (h.m.), Gormley (h.m.).

All three senior captains made the honor roll on the women’s side, and it’s no surprise there–they’ve been the backbone of this season’s roster. Also great to see Claire Denz, another understated player whose contributions transcend the scoresheet, make the honorable mentions list.

Our expanded coverage of tomorrow’s NCAA first-round match between Chicago and Aurora will begin on air at 10:15 a.m. If you are new to our setup, you can find all the information you need in order to stream the game at the Go Maroons Live sidebar to the right of this post, or at the Go Maroons Live tab at the top of the page. You can also e-mail us at gomaroons@gmail.com with any questions or comments. We will also be providing interactive coverage through our resurrected live blog, as well as our Twitter account (@GoMaroons). Our fearless ringleader Sean has a big deadline at work, so I will be doing play-by-play, with Ryan Tryzbiak in charge of color commentary. It’s gonna be a fun one, so be sure to tune in!

The men’s first-round match against Wartburg should go live from Wheaton at around 4:30 p.m. We’ll also have score updates from the other bracket matches (Wheaton vs. Carleton on the women’s side; Wheaton vs. Calvin on the men’s side) on Twitter.

It’s finally here: Chicago vs. Wheaton. Two top national programs settling it all on Stagg Field, right here in Chicago.

Emerald and I will have the game call Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m., but we first wanted to set up the history and tactical matchups that will play into tomorrow. One correction to the audio file: At the time, we hadn’t been aware that Laura Karsten, Wheaton’s stopper and midfield anchor, was hurt early in the season. It’s certainly a big loss for the Thunder, and we are anxious to see how that might change Wheaton’s look, if at all.

As a preview of this Go Maroons EXTRA podcast, here are three of the battles we will be watching:

• Winger Taryne Lee vs. Maroons fullbacks Maggie Tobin and Brigette Kragie

• Center mid Maria Della Torre against Chicago center mids Claire Gill and Emily Benoit

• the Maroons attackers trying to get behind Wheaton’s stopper-sweeper defense
